Machame and Lemosho are the two most popular routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, and choosing between them is usually the first real decision a climber has to make.
Quick answer
If you want the highest realistic chance of reaching Uhuru Peak and can spare an extra day or two, choose Lemosho. It follows a gentler acclimatisation profile and posts noticeably higher summit success rates. If you are reasonably fit, comfortable with a steeper early pace, and want one of the shorter, more affordable options, Machame is still an excellent and highly scenic route.
The Machame route
Machame is typically climbed in 6 or 7 days and is the most popular route on the mountain, known for its varied scenery and the dramatic Barranco Wall scramble. It gains altitude faster than Lemosho, especially in the first two days, which makes it a physically demanding route. Success rates reflect that pace: roughly 50 percent on the 6 day itinerary and around 70 to 80 percent on the 7 day version, according to independent route comparisons. We only run the 7 day itinerary with our groups, because the extra acclimatisation day makes a real difference to how climbers feel above 4,000 metres.
The Lemosho route
Lemosho usually runs 7 to 8 days and approaches the summit from the west, starting in genuine rainforest with a real chance of spotting colobus monkeys before the crowds from other routes join near Lava Tower. The extra days translate directly into better acclimatisation: independent success-rate comparisons put 8 day Lemosho climbs at around 85 to 90 percent, noticeably higher than the shorter Machame options. It costs a little more simply because you are on the mountain, and paying your crew, for longer.
Which one should you choose
Neither route is objectively better. Machame rewards climbers who want a shorter, more intense trip and can handle a faster altitude gain. Lemosho rewards climbers who want to maximise their summit chances, prefer a quieter start to the trek, and can commit an extra day or two. Budget, fitness, and how much time you have off work are usually the deciding factors, not scenery, since both routes are genuinely beautiful.
